However it has the singular distinction of being both a commonly used illegal substance and also a legally prescribed medical substance for mentally ill patients in many states. â€Å"Marijuana has been scientifically proven to reduce pain in patients suffering from conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis.†(Drug Policy Alliance) Based on the benefits, medical marijuana should be legalized. In the perspective of America s war on drugs, marijuana is one of the biggest enemies. Since alcohol and tobacco, two life threatening substances, are legal it is a relevant question to ask why marijuana is illegal. â€Å"The fact that marijuana is illegal is sufficiently caused by the amount of money, jobs, and pride invested in the drug war.† (Jacques) In other words, the government can not turn back now. Since the holistic and medical properties of this plant have been documented, why is it not legalized throughout the United States? This would both increase accessibility to the treatment for patients in states where medical marijuana is currently not legal and decrease the tax burden associated with the current criminalization of marijuana users. Additionally, this tax burden could be not only decreased, but reversed, with the legalization and taxation of the marijuana industry.
